I'm only seventeen but I would love to someday get an apprenticeship, so I've been working on art (tattoos that I want in the future, mostly) but they're very heavy-handed colored pencil drawings and I have no idea what kind of medium or stylistic qualities that tattoo artists look for in a portfolio? The only advice I've gotten is to include lots of color. Advice?
My advice would to work on a broad range of tattoo styles, not just the ones you want in the future, that way you’ve proven your not a one style pony. :) Until you’re fully trained spreading your wings is definitely the best option. In my experience people look for paintings; watercolour, oil, acrylic etc as well as the normal pencils/pens. Don’t just stick to brightly coloured - variety is the key!
